Why We Chose the 1718 Largillière Portrait (Not Houdon)
Most replicas use Houdon’s dramatic 1778 “grinning old man” version. We chose the youthful, sharp-eyed 1718 Atelier de Nicolas de Largillière portrait from the Musée Carnavalet because it shows Voltaire at his most iconic – energetic, witty, and dangerous. This is the image 18th-century Europe actually knew and loved.
Our Voltaire bust is cast directly from this painting-turned-sculpture reference, available in Antique Bronze or Stone White, with engraved base “Voltaire 1694–1778”.
