George Washington Bust: The True Story Behind the Most Famous Founding Father Portrait
The bust of George Washington – with its strong jaw, calm eyes, and dignified expression – is instantly recognisable as the face of America’s first president. For over 230 years it has symbolised leadership, integrity, and the birth of the nation.
The Original 1785 Portrait by Jean-Antoine Houdon
In 1785, at the request of the Virginia legislature, French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon travelled to Mount Vernon to create a life portrait of George Washington. Houdon took a life mask and measurements, producing the famous full-length statue (now in the Virginia State Capitol) and the separate bust that became the standard likeness.[1]
This Houdon bust is considered the most accurate three-dimensional portrait ever made of Washington, captured at age 53.

The Iconic Gilbert Stuart Painting (1796)
In 1796, American painter Gilbert Stuart created the “Athenaeum” portrait of George Washington – the unfinished head that became the most reproduced image of the first president. This painting, showing Washington with a calm, wise expression, was the direct inspiration for our Acclaimed Figures bust.[2]

Key Features of the Authentic Washington Portrait
- Strong jaw and firm mouth – symbol of resolve
- Calm, steady eyes – the look of quiet authority
- Natural hair (no wig) – Houdon’s choice for realism
- Slight asymmetry – capturing the real man
The Most Important Museum Examples
- Mount Vernon, Virginia – original Houdon life mask and plaster bust
- National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C. – Gilbert Stuart Athenaeum portrait (1796)
- Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York – marble Houdon bust

Why These Portraits Became the Standard
Houdon’s bust shows Washington in three dimensions from life. Stuart’s Athenaeum painting captures the wise, enduring face that appeared on the dollar bill. Together they define the Washington America remembers.
