The Portrait Reference +

Our True-To-Portrait process begins with finding the most accurate historical portrait available. For William Shakespeare, we chose the Chandos portrait (c. 1600–1610) — widely speculated to be the most accurate surviving likeness of Shakespeare, though no portrait has ever been officially confirmed as authentic. This bust is one of the only sculptures currently based on the Chandos portrait specifically.

The portrait captures the distinctive features of the subject — the well-groomed moustache and beard, the receding hairline with hair falling heavier at the sides and base, the sparse brows, the deep-set eyes, the tall prominent nose, and the small gold earring in his left ear, a fashionable accessory among Elizabethan writers and artists of the time. These details are drawn directly from this source and faithfully reproduced in every cast.

Who Was William Shakespeare? +
William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays and 154 sonnets — and we know almost nothing about who he was. The son of a glove-maker from Stratford-upon-Avon, he arrived in London, joined a theatre company, and produced a body of work so comprehensive in its understanding of human nature that every emotion, archetype, and moral conflict you can name is somewhere in it.

Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, A Midsummer Night’s Dream — of such range it inspired centuries of conspiracy theories about whether one man could have written it all. He did.
