Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton (1755–1804) was the brilliant, polarizing architect of America’s financial and governmental systems, rising from Caribbean poverty to become George Washington’s indispensable aide and the nation’s first Treasury Secretary.Born illegitimate on Nevis, orphaned young, and propelled to New York by intellect and ambition, he emerged as a fiery Revolutionary War officer and eloquent advocate for independence. At the Constitutional Convention and in the Federalist Papers (penning 51 of the 85 essays), he argued passionately for a strong central government. As Treasury Secretary (1789–1795), Hamilton created the First Bank of the United States, assumed state debts to bind the nation financially, established a revenue system through tariffs and excise taxes, and issued landmark Reports on Public Credit and Manufactures that laid the foundation for American capitalism. His vision of a commercial, industrial republic clashed repeatedly with Jefferson and Madison’s agrarian ideals, birthing America’s first political parties.Charismatic yet arrogant, duelist and workaholic, Hamilton’s career ended tragically in 1804 when Vice President Aaron Burr shot him dead in a duel at Weehawken. Despite dying at 49, his institutions endured, shaping the powerful federal government and dynamic economy he believed essential for the young republic’s survival.
