Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin (1809–1882) was the English naturalist whose theory of evolution by natural selection transformed biology and our view of life's origins.Born in Shrewsbury to a prosperous family, he briefly studied medicine and theology but found his passion in nature. At 22 he joined the HMS Beagle as ship's naturalist for a five-year global voyage (1831–1836), collecting specimens and observing geological and biological patterns—most famously the unique species on the Galápagos Islands—that sparked his revolutionary ideas.Back in England, Darwin spent two decades refining his evidence before publishing On the Origin of Species in 1859, co-credited with Alfred Russel Wallace, explaining descent with modification through natural selection. His later book The Descent of Man (1871) extended the theory to human evolution.Plagued by chronic illness, he lived reclusively at Down House, raising a family and corresponding tirelessly. Though his ideas ignited fierce religious and scientific debates, they became the bedrock of modern evolutionary biology. Darwin died in 1882 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, his gentle demeanor belying the profound impact of his work.
