The Portrait Reference +

Our True-To-Portrait process begins with finding the most accurate historical portrait available. For Charles Dickens, we chose the 1859 portrait by William Powell Frith — one of the most detailed painted likenesses of Dickens at the height of his literary career.

Vintage photograph of a man with a beard and formal attire, Charles Dickens

The portrait captures the intensity of a man who observed everything — the thick, full beard, the distinctive hair that sweeps and bulges at the sides, the concentrated crow’s feet at the corners of his eyes, the double fold of his left eyelid, and the long pointed nose that gave his face such a singular character. These details are drawn directly from this source and faithfully reproduced in every cast.

Who Was Charles Dickens? +
Charles Dickens watched his father rot in debtor’s prison and worked in a blacking factory as a child — and never forgot it. That experience fuelled novels that exposed the cruelty of Victorian poverty with such moral force that they changed public policy.

Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol — he invented the modern social novel and sentimental Christmas in the same career. He remains the most widely read English novelist in history.
