The Portrait Reference +

Our True-To-Portrait process begins with finding the most accurate historical portrait available. For Edgar Allan Poe, we chose the 1848 daguerreotype known as the “Ultima Thule” portrait, taken by Edwin Manchester in Providence — considered one of the most detailed and accurate photographic likenesses of Poe.

Black and white portrait of a man with a mustache against a dark background. Edgar Allan Poe

The daguerreotype captures the striking contrast of his features — the wide, prominent forehead, the deep-set dark eyes, the sparse moustache, the slightly slanted nose, and the unusually long neck that gave his silhouette such a distinctive quality. The heaviness of his brow and the gaunt intensity of his jaw are drawn directly from this source and faithfully reproduced in every cast.

Who Was Edgar Allan Poe? +
Edgar Allan Poe lived like one of his own stories — brilliant, tormented, and cut short too soon. An orphan raised in Richmond, he invented the modern detective story, pioneered American science fiction, and wrote poetry of such musical precision it could be felt before it was understood.

“The Raven,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Fall of the House of Usher” — work of haunting clarity from a man who barely made a living from it. Found delirious on a Baltimore street at 40, the circumstances of his death remain a mystery worthy of his fiction.
