Henry Ford
Henry Ford (1863–1947) was the visionary industrialist who revolutionized manufacturing and made the automobile a mass commodity, turning America into a nation on wheels.Born on a Michigan farm, he hated rural drudgery and fled to Detroit, where he tinkered endlessly with engines. After two failed companies, his third (the Ford Motor Company, founded 1903) succeeded with the reliable Model T in 1908. By introducing the moving assembly line in 1913–1914, he slashed production time for a car from 12 hours to 93 minutes, dropped the price from $850 to under $300, and made car ownership possible for ordinary workers. His famous $5-a-day wage in 1914 (double the industry norm) reduced turnover, created a stable workforce, and gave his own employees the means to buy the cars they built. Ruthlessly efficient, he standardized parts, vertically integrated his supply chain (owning forests, mines, and rubber plantations), and built the massive River Rouge complex, the largest factory in the world.Ford’s innovations spread prosperity but also revealed his darker side: fierce anti-unionism, antisemitic writings, and a paternalistic control over workers’ lives. By the late 1920s he stubbornly clung to the aging Model T and lost ground to Chevrolet, though the company later rebounded. Love him or hate him, Henry Ford democratized mobility, reshaped cities and suburbs, and defined the 20th-century assembly-line economy.
