Marie Curie
Marie Curie (1867–1934) was the pioneering Polish-French scientist who became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields (Physics 1903, Chemistry 1911).Born Maria Skłodowska in Russian-occupied Warsaw, she studied clandestinely before moving to Paris, where she earned degrees in physics and mathematics at the Sorbonne while living in near-poverty. Working in a freezing shed with her husband Pierre Curie, she isolated the elements polonium and radium, coined the term “radioactivity,” and established radioactivity as a property of individual atoms. After Pierre’s tragic death in 1906, she succeeded him as the Sorbonne’s first female professor. During World War I she designed mobile X-ray units (“little Curies”) that saved countless soldiers’ lives. Relentlessly dedicated, she refused to patent her discoveries, believing science should serve humanity. Chronic exposure to radiation, which she did not fully understand as dangerous, ultimately caused her death from aplastic anemia at sixty-six. Her notebooks remain radioactive today. Courageous, brilliant, and tireless, Curie shattered barriers for women in science and laid the foundation for modern nuclear physics and cancer treatment.
